Dear Friends,
Its that time of the year when the everything around us is going through transformation and towards balance. Whether its Earth’s Atmosphere, Lunar cycle, Environment, Climate or your own body, which not surprisingly is only a reflection of the cosmic phenomenon.

Gracefully transforming ourselves and acclimatise our inner self to the external changes is the key to survival and lead a healthy & longer life. Its even more imperative to keep our body and especially mind cool during this extreme and harsh summers in 2018 (“The India Meteorological Department warned that the average temperatures in most parts of India are expected to be “above normal” between April and June” ~ NDTV)

During summers just like Sun – the solar energy is dominant, Similarly in our body the solar plexus region around navel is also dominant. Due to which the Pitta Prakriti is also dominant.

But thanks to the 5000 year old techniques which can help us beat the tough summers with grace and in a healthy manner without falling ill. I was inspired to write this blog after watching the below short video by renowned Sri Sri Yoga Teacher – Kamlesh Barwal (@KamleshBarwal)

Kamlesh Ji has beautifully demonstrated the set of asanas and pranayamas in her video – “Yoga tips to Cool Off this Summer” which anyone can practise to bring down the body heat in the abdominal region and cooling the body with controlled, deep long breathing without much exertion.

Some key take-aways

  1. Focus on breathe rather than going deeper in asana.
  2. Pitta, Heat is all around us and inside us, mind and body is heated. Focus on releasing heats and calm mind.
  3. Lung Opening asana and Chest opening asana very good for summer months,
  4. Yoga Asana
    1. Forward bends – holding toes
    2. Gentle Back Bends – open chest to release heats – Fish Pose (Matsyasana)
    3. Practise Spinal Twists
    4. Cobra Pose – Bhujangasana
    5. Bridge Pose – Sethubandasana
    6. Spinal Twists
    7. Child Pose – Shishuasana
    8. Cat/Cow Stretch – Marjariasana/Bitilasana
    9. End with Yog Nidra – Corpse Pose
    10. Avoid chakra asana or inversions.
    11. Asana is best to practise during morning hours or in evening.
  5. Pranaymas
    1. Left Nostril breathing – Chandra Bedhi helps in cooling body
    2. Sheetkari Pranayama and
    3. Sheetli Pranayama.
    4. Avoid Sheetkari and Sheetli Pranayama when you have fever, cough, cold.
    5. Also avoid right before meals or immediately after meals when metabolism is low and or else it would hamper the digestion.
    6. Pranayama can be practised anytime during day.
  6. Keep yourself hydrated by drinking sufficient water/fruit juices.

Hope you find the video and tips informative as much as I found it.

Thanks,
Vijay
