Last updated on October 14th, 2021 at 05:35 pm

“I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.” ~ Nelson Mandela

Today (18th July 2018) is Nelson Mandela Day.

Purification

Last updated on October 14th, 2021 at 05:37 pm

Material objects are purified by passage of time, body by bathing, dirt by washing, and embodied beings by rituals. The senses are purified by austerity, rituals by yagnas, wealth by charity, the mind by calm, and the jiva by the knowledge of the Atman, the Soul.

Day to worship the 5 elements inside out!

Last updated on October 14th, 2021 at 05:37 pm

Dear Friends,

5th of June is World Environment Day. I spent few minutes of my Sunday to jot down few tips which is easy to follow and can make a huge difference to World Environment.

  • Re-Usable paper cloth instead of tissues.
  • Replace polythene with jute bags or bags made of old sarees/clothes.
  • Switch off ignition at traffic signals
  • Park your vehicle few step before lift/escalators in mall and walk remaining distance.
  • Take lift one-two floors before your actual floor and climb stairs for remaining floors.
  • Keep indoor plants like Areca -Palm, Snake plant, spider plants and Aloe Vera plant in office and home.
  • Keep a bowl of water during this summer on your terrace or near window for birds and pigeons.
  • Summer is season of water-melon, musk-melon, papaya and Oranges, Keep the seeds of this fruits safely. This is also season of vacation, when you travel on vacation by road/train/bus through barren lands please throw/spread these seeds, so that when the monsoon rains arrive even if few of the seeds survive and turn into plants and out of them some can turn into trees become fodder for cattle.
  • Use vegetable skins and waste in home and use it as fertiliser for plants/kitchen garden.
  • Hundreds and thousands of cow/calf die every year in summer out of hunger. Prepare one chapatti extra for stray cow/calf this summer.
  • Take steps to avoid leakage of water from water-coolers, tanks and pipes. Collect the water from outlet of ACs and use it for plants.
  • Use earthen pot instead of refrigerated water. This would give employment to rural people and will also promote good health in the urban people.
  • Profitable corporates which can afford the solar infrastructure can opt for it as long term strategic initiatives.

Small change by each one of us, can make a huge difference to curb the global warming, reduce carbon foot prints, control the pollution and promote health and hygiene.

Let’s join hands to worship the five elements – Fire, Air, Space (Ether), Earth and Water. These five elements makes the environment and each one of us are also made up of same five elements.

-Vijay

Yoga, Pranayamas & Diet for Summers

Last updated on October 14th, 2021 at 05:37 pm

Dear Friends,
Its that time of the year when the everything around us is going through transformation and towards balance. Whether its Earth’s Atmosphere, Lunar cycle, Environment, Climate or your own body, which not surprisingly is only a reflection of the cosmic phenomenon.

Gracefully transforming ourselves and acclimatise our inner self to the external changes is the key to survival and lead a healthy & longer life. Its even more imperative to keep our body and especially mind cool during this extreme and harsh summers in 2018 (“The India Meteorological Department warned that the average temperatures in most parts of India are expected to be “above normal” between April and June” ~ NDTV)

During summers just like Sun – the solar energy is dominant, Similarly in our body the solar plexus region around navel is also dominant. Due to which the Pitta Prakriti is also dominant.

But thanks to the 5000 year old techniques which can help us beat the tough summers with grace and in a healthy manner without falling ill. I was inspired to write this blog after watching the below short video by renowned Sri Sri Yoga Teacher – Kamlesh Barwal (@KamleshBarwal)

Kamlesh Ji has beautifully demonstrated the set of asanas and pranayamas in her video – “Yoga tips to Cool Off this Summer” which anyone can practise to bring down the body heat in the abdominal region and cooling the body with controlled, deep long breathing without much exertion.

Some key take-aways

  1. Focus on breathe rather than going deeper in asana.
  2. Pitta, Heat is all around us and inside us, mind and body is heated. Focus on releasing heats and calm mind.
  3. Lung Opening asana and Chest opening asana very good for summer months,
  4. Yoga Asana
    1. Forward bends – holding toes
    2. Gentle Back Bends – open chest to release heats – Fish Pose (Matsyasana)
    3. Practise Spinal Twists
    4. Cobra Pose – Bhujangasana
    5. Bridge Pose – Sethubandasana
    6. Spinal Twists
    7. Child Pose – Shishuasana
    8. Cat/Cow Stretch – Marjariasana/Bitilasana
    9. End with Yog Nidra – Corpse Pose
    10. Avoid chakra asana or inversions.
    11. Asana is best to practise during morning hours or in evening.
  5. Pranaymas
    1. Left Nostril breathing – Chandra Bedhi helps in cooling body
    2. Sheetkari Pranayama and
    3. Sheetli Pranayama.
    4. Avoid Sheetkari and Sheetli Pranayama when you have fever, cough, cold.
    5. Also avoid right before meals or immediately after meals when metabolism is low and or else it would hamper the digestion.
    6. Pranayama can be practised anytime during day.
  6. Keep yourself hydrated by drinking sufficient water/fruit juices.

Hope you find the video and tips informative as much as I found it.

Thanks,
Vijay
