Yoga, Pranayamas & Diet for Summers

Last updated on April 10th, 2018 at 05:00 pm

Dear Friends,
Its that time of the year when the everything around us is going through transformation and towards balance. Whether its Earth’s Atmosphere, Lunar cycle, Environment, Climate or your own body, which not surprisingly is only a reflection of the cosmic phenomenon.

Gracefully transforming ourselves and acclimatise our inner self to the external changes is the key to survival and lead a healthy & longer life. Its even more imperative to keep our body and especially mind cool during this extreme and harsh summers in 2018 (“The India Meteorological Department warned that the average temperatures in most parts of India are expected to be “above normal” between April and June” ~ NDTV)

During summers just like Sun – the solar energy is dominant, Similarly in our body the solar plexus region around navel is also dominant. Due to which the Pitta Prakriti is also dominant.

But thanks to the 5000 year old techniques which can help us beat the tough summers with grace and in a healthy manner without falling ill. I was inspired to write this blog after watching the below short video by renowned Sri Sri Yoga Teacher – Kamlesh Barwal (@KamleshBarwal)

Kamlesh Ji has beautifully demonstrated the set of asanas and pranayamas in her video – “Yoga tips to Cool Off this Summer” which anyone can practise to bring down the body heat in the abdominal region and cooling the body with controlled, deep long breathing without much exertion.

Some key take-aways

  1. Focus on breathe rather than going deeper in asana.
  2. Pitta, Heat is all around us and inside us, mind and body is heated. Focus on releasing heats and calm mind.
  3. Lung Opening asana and Chest opening asana very good for summer months,
  4. Yoga Asana
    1. Forward bends – holding toes
    2. Gentle Back Bends – open chest to release heats – Fish Pose (Matsyasana)
    3. Practise Spinal Twists
    4. Cobra Pose – Bhujangasana
    5. Bridge Pose – Sethubandasana
    6. Spinal Twists
    7. Child Pose – Shishuasana
    8. Cat/Cow Stretch – Marjariasana/Bitilasana
    9. End with Yog Nidra – Corpse Pose
    10. Avoid chakra asana or inversions.
    11. Asana is best to practise during morning hours or in evening.
  5. Pranaymas
    1. Left Nostril breathing – Chandra Bedhi helps in cooling body
    2. Sheetkari Pranayama and
    3. Sheetli Pranayama.
    4. Avoid Sheetkari and Sheetli Pranayama when you have fever, cough, cold.
    5. Also avoid right before meals or immediately after meals when metabolism is low and or else it would hamper the digestion.
    6. Pranayama can be practised anytime during day.
  6. Keep yourself hydrated by drinking sufficient water/fruit juices.

Hope you find the video and tips informative as much as I found it.

eat to live, not live to eat – ब्रह्मार्पणं ब्रह्म हविः

Last updated on June 3rd, 2018 at 11:12 pm

Dear Friends,
Today, I completed Ayurveda Cooking Course.

Ayurveda cooking
Ayurveda cooking

eat to live, not live to eat – ब्रह्मार्पणं ब्रह्म हविः

brahmArpaNaM brahma haviH brahmAgnau brahmaNA hutam ।
brahmaiva tena gantavyaM brahmakarmasamAdhinA ।।

brahmārpaṇaṃ brahma haviḥ brahmāgnau brahmaṇā hutam ।
brahmaiva tena gantavyaṃ brahmakarmasamādhinā ॥

This is another mantra/shloka that is very well known, very simple sanskrit and far reaching meaning. appearing in the bhagawad-gItA 4.24, this is a shloka commonly recited before eating food. the instrument, the object, the doer and the act – of offering are all brahma; (one who considers thus) state of brahma alone is the destination worthy of such who is steadfast in such selfless deeds.

Not just another brick in the wall

The hallmark of sound educational system is that which emphasis on IQ (Intelligent Quotient), EQ (Emotional Quotient), SQ (Spiritual Quotient) and PQ (Physical Quotient). Ancient education system in India focused on holistic development of an individual.

Disappointingly, today more or less the education system is confined to just producing intellectual machines. Sadly, DINKs and DEWKs parents want their kids to be in academics and coaching classes to stay ahead in the rat race and just be “Another brick in the wall“.

On 27 September 2014, during his address to UN General Assembly, Mr. Narendra Modi, Hon’ble Indian Prime Minister had said – “Yoga is an invaluable gift of India’s ancient tradition“. Gladly, adoption of 21st June as International Day of Yoga is a positive step towards reviving this fading ancient system of education.

Regular practice of yoga can unite the Mind, Body and Spirit. When citizens are happy and healthy, they will never want to be just another brick in the wall. Yoga can help countries to move towards becoming a welfare state. The goal of a welfare state is that citizens of the country will aim for the top of the Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. Fewer people will want to be at the bottom of the pyramid in amassing unreasonable wealth just for their physiological needs and security needs.

Mysterious Cycle of Exist, Evolve, Express and Extinguish

Dear Friends,
On 19th July 2016, on the occasion of Guru Purnima; my niece, Sanchi Mahawar left for her heavenly abode. She left the mortal body after fighting for life for two months from rare SLE disease.

Sanchi Mahawar (31-07-2004 to 19-07-2016)

At this time, when my family is still mourning this great irreversible loss, I pray for the departed soul and may her soul rest in peace.

Below is the shanti mantra from Katho Upanishad

English Transalation:
Oṃ saha nāv avatu
saha nau bhunaktu
saha vīryaṃ karavāvahai
tejasvi nāv adhītam astu
mā vidviṣāvahai |
Om śāntiḥ śāntiḥ śāntiḥ ||

Aum! May He protect us both together; may He nourish us both together;
May we work conjointly with great energy,
May our study be vigorous and effective;
May we not mutually dispute (or may we not hate any).
Aum! Let there be peace in me!
Let there be peace in my environment!
Let there be peace in the forces that act on me!

“We are not human beings on this spiritual journey,
But we are spiritual beings on this human journey.”

This quote makes me wonder about our existence and this entire creation in itself.

Life becomes meaningful when we closely understand the purpose of our existence beyond the realm of physical matters or five elements alone. As its familiar that our physical existence revolves around five elements – Fire, Air, Space, Earth and Water. There is more to our existence which cannot be described in words alone and which can only be experienced. I would like to end with a shloka from Brihadaranyaka Upanishad

English Transalation:
Om Asato Maa Sad-Gamaya |
Tamaso Maa Jyotir-Gamaya |
Mrtyor-Maa Amrtam Gamaya |
Om Shaantih Shaantih Shaantih ||

1: Om, (O Lord) Keep me not in the Unreality (of the bondage of the Phenomenal World), but lead me towards the Reality (of the Eternal Self),
2: (O Lord) Keep me not in the Darkness (of Ignorance), but lead me towards the Light (of Spiritual Knowledge),
3: (O Lord) Keep me not in the (Fear of) Death (due to the bondage of the Mortal World), but lead me towards the Immortality (gained by the Knowledge of the Immortal Self beyond Death),
4: Om, (May there be) Peace, Peace, Peace (at the the three levels – Adidaivika, Adibhautika and Adhyatmika).

I wish that mysterious cycle of “Exist – Evolve – Express – Extinguish” will be better understood someday.

Om Shaantih Shaantih Shaantih ||

Seven Chakras – A Fascinating Journey Within

Last updated on July 24th, 2016 at 04:22 pm

Recently, I had an opportunity to do a study and submit a report on “Yoga and Naturopathy”. A part of my report shows study on seven different chakras in subtle body and their significance & meaning. The copy of my report on “Yoga and Naturopathy”, which was prepared and submitted in partial fulfilment of my MBA program from Sri Sri University is available here.

Chakras are energy centres in subtle body. Musical Instruments have deep impact on our body and mind. Following video is a post from “World Cultural Festival” which concluded on 11th-13th March 2016 as part of celebration of 35 years of “Art of Living” organisation.

Other reports prepared and submitted by me during MBA program in General Management with specialisation in Finance and Marketing can be accessed here.

Happy Vasant Panchami

Goddess Saraswati is the light of hope and peace. Happy Vasant Panchami and Saraswati Puja. May all your wishes get fulfilled.

Goddess Saraswati is the light of hope and peace. Happy Vasant Panchami and Saraswati Puja. May all your wishes get fulfilled.

Saraswati Devi, who is the deity of knowledge, art and music denotes serenity and calmness. She is generally shown seated on a white lotus, wearing a pure white silk sari and holding a book in her lower left hand. The eyes of the goddess are full of compassion. Her four hands denote four facets of human personality namely mind, intellect, alertness and ego. The lotus on her hand symbolizes true knowledge. Her ride is a white swan which is known for its peculiar capability of separating water from the milk. The swan indicates that we should have the ability to discriminate the bad from the good.

And today is the day, Basant Panchami, which is also known as the Saraswati Day, is the day when children are taught their first words, making it an auspicious occasion which marks the beginning of their learning process. It is generally said that there is no comparison between a king and a learned person as the king is honored only in his land but a learned person is respected everywhere. Basant Panchami spiritually signifies that the days of ignorance and gloom are over and the period of joy and spiritual awakening has begun.

Song: Saraswati Puja
Lyricist: Sage Agasthya

Ya kundendu tushara haara dhavala, ya shubhra vastravrita
Ya veena vara danda mandithakara, ya shwetha padmaasana
Ya brahmachyuthaha shankara prabrithibhi devai, sada poojitha
Samaam paatu saraswathi bhagavathi, nihshesha Jaddyapaha.

Salutations to devi Saraswati, who is pure white like Jasmine and covered with white garments,
with the coolness of Moon, brightness of snow and shine like the garland of Pearls.
Whose hands are adorned with Veena and the boon giving staff and who is seated on white lotus.
Who is always adored by lord Brahma, Vishnu, Shankara and other devas.
O goddess, please protect me and remove my ignorance completely
